During her college time, she regularly participated in dance and fashion shows.
In 2009, Pooja started her career with modeling. She competed in Miss India 2009 competition but was eliminated in an early-round despite winning the Miss India Talented 2009 honor. She re-applied the following year and was the second runner-up in the Miss Universe India 2010 competition, while also being crowned Miss India South Glamorous Hair 2010 in the subsidiary competition.
Pooja Hegde made her acting debut with Mugamoodu, opposite Jiiva. She was selected after Mysskin had seen still photographers from the pageant success, and Pooja helped practice Tamil dialogues for the film by writing and memorizing words in English, adding that the similarity between Tamil and her native tongue Tulu was also useful. However, this movie got negative reviews from critics, and the film ended up becoming a surprise commercial failure.
Then, Pooja appeared in Oka Laila Kosam in 2014. She was praised for her performance in the movie. In her second Telugu film, Pooja impresses many with her memorable performance in Gopikamma Song from Mukunda in 2014.
In the same year, she debuted in the Bollywood industry. Pooja appeared in Mohenjo Daro film, opposite Hritik Roshan. She was selected after Gowarike's wife had spotted her in an advertisement and called her to audition, which was successfully completed. Again, this movie became a major box office flop.
