STARTUP STORY
"Being a home baker was the closest I sought I would come to be my own boss. Little did I imagine that motherhood would change her life in such unexpected ways. In order to continue backing whilst looking after my 45-day old son, I stumbled upon babywearing, and life was never the same thereafter". says Bayiravi.
Babywearing is the practice of carrying your baby in a sling or any other form of cloth fastened to your chest or back. While backing, she often has to spend hours in the kitchen, and she found it challenging to work and care for her newborn son at the same time. As a solution, began using an old saree or dupatta to keep her son tied to her.
This idea was inspired by the age-old habits of women who would tie their children to themselves while working in fields or tea estates.
This solution was good for the baby as well as the caregiver, who could now use their hands freely. She quickly figured that this was a business opportunity. Then, she launched Kol Kol Baby carrier in 2014.

When she launched this startup, her immediate circle of friends was of the belief that she had launched the business because she was bored of baking. However, nothing deterred her. She would travel to a friend's workshop two hours away and spend hours getting sample after sample made. Not having a design background only pushed her to work harder.
The first big investment she made was to get a second-hand sewing machine for Rs.10,000. The rest went towards the tailor's salary and buying the raw materials for the carrier. Each carrier was priced at Rs.3500 so they ended up making close to Rs.35,000 the initial few months.
Today, the startup has 15 tailors, and make selling more than 600 carriers each month. They have an annual turnover of over a crore.
